Steam parental controls: Steam Families, playtime limits and purchase requests

Steam Families replaced both sharing and Family View

Valve folded Family Sharing and Family View into one feature. A Steam Family holds up to six people, and you manage it from the desktop client, a browser or your phone.

There are two roles. An adult manages invitations and restrictions; a child cannot open family settings and can have parental controls applied to their account.

Libraries stack: games owned by family members show up in one list while staying with their owners, and a single copy can be played by one person at a time.

Where the controls live

Your child needs their own Steam account, added to your friends list and invited into the family.

Then go to Account Details → Manage Steam Families → Manage, pick the child account and switch on parental controls for that user.

What you can actually restrict

Games. You tick the titles the child may launch. Anything left unticked stays out of reach, even when it sits in the family library.

Steam features. The store, the community and chat are separate switches. That answers the question most parents actually have: the game may be gentle, and the conversation next to it may not be.

Playtime. Limits go in the same panel, and the reports show how much time went into which game.

Requests. A child can ask for extra time or for a feature to be unlocked, and you approve it from your own device. Purchases work the same way: the child sends a cart, an adult pays, and the game lands in the child account.

Rules people discover later

A child cannot leave a family on their own. Only adult members or Steam Support can remove them.

An adult may leave at any time, but joining or creating another family only becomes possible a year after joining the previous one, and the freed seat stays reserved for that year as well.

If a child loses access to their account, an adult can recover it, but only once 30 days have passed since the child joined the family.

What Steam does not cover

These settings end where Steam ends. Other stores and launchers, browser games, videos about those same games and messenger chats are outside them. For the voice chat running next to the game, see Discord parental controls.

So is total screen time. Steam counts hours inside Steam; it will not tell you the client was closed at midnight and streams ran until two.

That is why most families combine the two layers: rules inside Steam are set in Steam, and the frame around the computer is set on the device. Agree first, switch on second

Controls a child never heard about last until the first well-informed classmate. On Steam that happens faster than elsewhere, because friends with the same accounts are one message away.

The order that works: choose the list of games together, agree on weekday and weekend hours, then turn the settings on. The request button turns the evening argument into two taps. The child asks, the parent answers.
