Controls on Samsung that survive the optimiser

One UI saves battery at the expense of background apps by default, and it revokes permissions from apps left unused. For parental controls those are two ways to quietly stop working.

Set it up in 3 minutes

Two quiet ways it breaks

Background use is “optimised”

By default Samsung decides when to close an app. The time counter and the blocks become unreliable.

Permissions revoke themselves

The switch “remove permissions if app is unused” is on by default. The parent never opens the child app — and the permissions are gone.

No overlay means no break screen

The “appear on top” permission is what puts the break over a game. Without it the child never sees it.

Tablets are often shared

On a family tablet it is easy to forget the controls are only on one profile.

What to change in One UI

Verified on a Galaxy Tab S6 running Android 12, in both the Russian and the English interface.

  • Set battery to “Unrestricted”

Settings → Apps → Gardion Kids → Battery. Of the three options you need the top one: allow background battery use without restrictions.

  • Turn off permission auto-revoke

On the app info screen there is a switch “remove permissions if app is unused”. Turn it off.

  • Check “Appear on top”

Same screen, further down. It must say “On”, otherwise the break screen will not appear over a game.

  • Leave the permissions alone

The camera is only for the movement warm-up, location is for the map. We do not read messages and never switch on the microphone.
