Thirteen is the age half of the children’s-internet rules are tied to. On this birthday Google shows the child a “stop supervision” button, the teenager starts believing the controls are now illegal, and the parent feels everything is falling apart. In reality less changes than it seems, and the real question of this birthday is different: not “should we remove the controls” but “how do we hand over freedom without handing it all over at once.”
What actually changes at 13
In Google Family Link, from age 13 (the threshold differs in some countries) the child gains the right to start turning supervision off. A right is not the same as an ability: until 18 the switch-off requires the parent’s approval, and it cannot be done in secret — the parent gets a notification.
Google may also offer the child a move to a standard account. If you approve the move, supervision ends; if not, everything stays as it was. No automatic removal happens at midnight on the birthday.
Why the teenager asks to remove the controls
Behind the request there is usually not a wish to sit on the phone till morning but status: at 13, controls feel like a “little kid” label. The stricter the rules and the less the teenager understands what the parent actually sees, the stronger the urge to shed the whole package.
That is why a conversation works better than a refusal. Show the teenager what the parent really sees: time and apps — yes, private messages — no. Half of the conflict leaves at this step.
Freedom by steps
Removing everything at once on the birthday is an almost guaranteed rollback a month later: sleep drifts past midnight, grades sag, and the controls come back with a fight. A ladder works better, where every step is an exchange of trust.
Start by widening the limits: more time on weekdays, free weekends. Then release whole categories — messengers, music, maps. Keep the night boundary and school hours for last: their job is sleep and study. Talk through every step: what opens up and what the teenager takes on in return.
When the controls should come off entirely
If the teenager keeps the agreements for months without reminders, puts the phone away in the evening on their own and talks calmly about what they do online — the controls have done their job. Remove them openly and together, as agreed: an honest endpoint of a road you walked together.
